The 4 Most Common Questions About Headshot Photos

Here are the four most common questions we hear about getting professional headshots done; answered by a pro headshot photographer with decades of photography experience!

As a professional headshot photographer based in Southern Oregon, I often receive many questions from clients who are looking to update their professional images. Here are answers to four of the most common questions we get at Oregon Studio Group about getting professional headshot photos.

1. Why Do I Need a Professional Headshot?

Yes, it sounds cliche', but it's true that your professional headshot is often the first impression you make in your career. Whether it's for a LinkedIn profile, a company website, or personal branding, a high-quality headshot sends an instant, visual message of professionalism, confidence, and approachability. A professional headshot photographer knows how to capture your best angles and expressions, ensuring that your personality shines through while maintaining a polished and professional look.

2. What Should I Wear for My Headshot?

Choosing the right outfit for your headshot session is crucial. Here are some tips:

  • Keep it Simple: Solid colors work best. Avoid busy patterns and logos that can distract from your face.

  • Professional Attire: Dress as you would for a job interview in your industry. For most, this means business casual or formal attire.

  • Layers and Textures: Adding a blazer or jacket can add dimension to your photo.

  • Accessories: Keep them minimal and understated. Now isn't the time to choose the neon floral tie!

Remember, the goal is to look professional and approachable, so be sure your clothing choices make you feel confident and comfortable. If an itchy seam in your blazer is scratching you during your photo session, that discomfort will almost always show on your face, however minimally. Check out this link for even more information about what to wear for headshots.

3. How Should I Prepare for My Headshot Session?

Preparation is key to a successful headshot session. Here are a few steps you can take:

  • Get Plenty of Rest: A good night's sleep will help you look refreshed and vibrant.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session to ensure your skin looks its best.

  • Grooming: Make sure your hair is neatly styled and consider a professional makeup application if it makes you feel more confident.

  • Practice: Spend some time in front of the mirror practicing different expressions. A natural, relaxed smile often works best.

4. What Can I Expect During the Headshot Session?

In this post, I'll give you a quick rundown, but for even more information about what to expect during your headshot session, visit the link. When you arrive at our studio here in Medford, we'll start with a brief chat to discuss your goals for the session (if we haven't already done so over the phone when you booked). We'll go over your outfit choices and make any necessary adjustments. During the shoot, I'll guide you through various poses and expressions to capture a range of looks, poses, and expressions. My goal is to make you feel comfortable and relaxed so that your true personality can shine through.

After the session, I'll provide you with a selection of the best shots, and you can choose your favorite(s) for retouching. One digital image is included with each headshot session, but you can purchase as many more digital images as you'd like during the selection! The final images will be moderately retouched and polished to perfection, ensuring you look your absolute best.
